Check out this video that explains what cystic fibrosis is!
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder that can cause severe damage to the lungs, digestive systems, and other body organs. An estimated 40,000 children and adults are living with cystic fibrosis in the United States. In people who have CF, mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene causes the CFTR protein to become dysfunctional. When the protein cannot function correctly, it cannot help move chloride to the cell surface. This causes the thickening of mucus in various organs. To understand how cystic fibrosis affects the lungs, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has created a video which I have embedded below.
The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website is a great resource to learn more about CF, whether you have been recently diagnosed or your loved ones have received this diagnosis. Below I will provide some links to specific parts of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website, to help make their information more easily accessible.
