TEDx Talk by Dr. Amrita Sen Mukherjee
In this TEDx Talk, Dr. Mukherjee, Co-Chair of the Disabled Doctors Network, shares her personal struggle with temporal lobe epilepsy and the misunderstanding she has experienced to embracing self-advocacy and rediscovering her identity. She highlights how people with invisible disabilities face the burden of being judged or labeled lazy or unreliable, even though their struggles are real but just not seen by outsiders. She challenges the frameworks and biases that society imposes and invites us to consider the potential for change when we unmask the strengths and abilities of the marginalized. She encourages us to seek to understand people beyond their appearance and offer support to those who may be facing unseen challenges.
I want to highlight this TEDx Talk as Dr. Mukherjee does a fantastic job at raising awareness about invisible disabilities. Her personal struggle with temporal lobe epilepsy, an invisible disability, allows her to give personal insight on the struggles someone with invisible disabilities may face. I love how she challenges her audience to rethink how they view others, urging them to not judge others by what is on the surface, but instead to show compassion to all around them. This shift in mindset can ultimately foster a more inclusive environment so that people with invisible disabilities can feel seen and understood. This Talk is also incredibly empowering for those who are currently struggling, or have struggled, with an invisibility. Dr. Mukherjee’s emphasis on self-advocacy and acceptance encourages those who may be struggling with invisible disabilities to find personal identity and meaning beyond societal expectations.
Overall, I believe this TEDx Talk is a great one for those who are currently struggling with an invisible disability, or those who want to help make the world a more inclusive place for those who are struggling with invisible disabilities.
